Alton detectives are on the hunt for two men who burgled an elderly woman's house in Whitedown.
The distraction burglary happened just before 3.30pm on Tuesday, July 31.

The victim was looking for her cat on the doorstep of her home at Whitedown when she was approached by two men.

They said they needed to go inside her house to look at s
omething.

As she led them through the hallway she became suspicious and directed them towards the back door.

She locked the men outside and they left.

It was then she noticed that a quantity of money was missing.

Detective Sergeant Fiona Holland said: “The men are described as being tall and one was wearing a stripy jumper.

“I would urge anyone who thinks they may have seen these men in the area to come forward.”

Police are offering the following advice to avoid becoming a victim of this sort of crime:

n Stop – are you expecting anyone to call on you?

Do you know the person at the door?

Don’t be misled by what appear to be genuine reasons for calling on you.

n Check – A genuine caller will carry identification and will be happy to wait outside while you check it. Remember to source your own number for the company they are claiming to be from, don’t accept a number from the caller.

n Chain – fit a door chain or spy hole so that you can speak to callers or check who they are without opening the door fully.

Contact Alton CID on 0845 045 45 45.
