Petersfield return to league action with convincing victory

Petersfield 36 Ellingham & Ringwood 5: AFTER last week’s disappointment of a cancelled cup game, Petersfield’s first team returned to league action at the weekend against one of the few sides to have beaten them so far this season, Ellingham and Ringwood.

Field scored three tries in the first half with number eight Harley Orr adding to his season’s tally. Tom Franks and Josh Haslett scored the other tries, and a single conversion gave Field a 17-0 lead at the break.

Former captain Gareth Crane scored the team’s bonus point try in the second half, going over through a crowd of teammates. Again, the conversion was missed, leaving six points on the pitch.

Field went back on the hunt for their fifth try, which came midway through the third quarter and came directly from a five-metre scrum. With Field walking the ball towards the line, Ellingham and Ringwood dived in early to prevent the score, giving the referee no option but to award a penalty try before adding to the visitors’ woes with a yellow card.

The resultant conversion was the easiest of the game, and Haslett added the extras.

Five minutes later Ellingham and Ringwood battled back with a rare foray into Field’s half. Hard work creating an overlap on the right hand side that they exploited with ease to claw back a try which was unconverted.

Field scored their sixth try when Eddie Matthews was set free wide on the left. Despite the difficulty of the kick, Matt Painter struck it well and added the extras.
