Petersfield Town 0 Aylesbury 1: THIS result on Saturday confirmed mathematically that Petersfield Town will not now be able to escape the bottom two places in Southern League Division 1 Central.
Relegation is now almost inevitable unless the football authorities decide to offer Petersfield a reprieve due to the failings of other clubs elsewhere.
The Rams put in an improved performance at Love Lane but they lacked any real attacking threat which they needed to get themselves something from the game.
You would only need a couple of fingers to count up the chances on goal Petersfield had in this game but the visitors built up quite a head of steam before they took the lead in the first half.
Aylesbury were putting the home side under relentless pressure and on 13 minutes they almost went in front. Both Davis Haule and Glenn Yala had shots blocked on the line as Petersfield somehow survived the onslaught.
However, the match winning goal came four minutes later when the ball was pulled back to the edge of the penalty area from the right hand side. Alex O’Brien’s shot took a big deflection and it looped up past keeper Matt Collins, who couldn’t scramble across his line quickly enough to keep the ball out.
On 37 minutes a perfect cross was fired across the face of goal from the left and Ty Deacon slid in but couldn’t apply the touch to take the ball over the line.
Petersfield had their first effort on goal on 41 minutes when a free kick was cleared to the edge of the box and Ryan Woodford turned and fired a low shot on goal but it was straight at keeper James Weatherill.
Six minutes after the restart it should have been 2-0 when another cross across the face of goal saw Josh Bamford try to slide in to touch the ball home but defender Luke Edwards did enough to put him off doing so.
On 67 minutes the ball was played in from the right and Ruddock Yala hit a first time shot which flew just over the crossbar.
Three minutes later the Rams almost equalised from a free kick 25 yards out. Woodford curled the ball around the wall but Weatherill dived to his left to push the shot around the post.
On 77 minutes Collins made a terrific one handed save when he threw himself to his left to keep Bamford’s header from a corner out of the net.
Four minutes before the end there was chaos in the Petersfield penalty area. Glenn Yala went one on one with Collins, who forced the Aylesbury man wide.
When the shot came in it was initially blocked on the line but the clearance hit Collins, bounced back into the six yard box and the follow up effort was blocked again on the line before eventually being hacked clear.
