PETERSFIELD Rugby Club head coach James Alder praised his players after they beat New Milton 53-17 to win the Snows Group Hampshire 1 title.
Saturday’s victory secured Field’s promotion to London 3 South West.
Field needed a bonus point win against their title rivals, while not allowing New Milton a losing bonus point, and Alder was pleased with how his side dealt with the pressure.
Alder said: “The boys really stepped up and played under great pressure.
“The team were prepared physically and mentally and produced their best performance of the season.”
One of the keys to Petersfield’s success has been their defence, and the team have finished with the best defensive record in the league.
“When I took over last summer, I wanted to shore up the defence,” said Alder.
“Defence was a massive part of improving the team and, other than allowing two tries in the second half, our defence was impeccable.”
The forwards dominated against New Milton, and Alder was full of praise for his players.
Alder said: “The forwards are well drilled and the pack dominated every set piece on Saturday. The backs were powerful, slick and had pace to burn. It was a pleasure to witness the way the tries were scored.
“This first season has been a dream. We did a lot of fitness and skill work at the start of the season and all credit to the players as they have bought into everything I have asked of them.”
