WOMEN’S Premier League football came to Petersfield on Sunday when Pompey Ladies took on Coventry United at Love Lane.
Petersfield Town Football Club hosted the Portsmouth side for their final match of the season in the Southern Division of the FA?Women’s Premier League.
Pompey fell to a 3-1 defeat but there was plenty of quality football to enjoy during what was the last game to be played on the Love Lane pitch before the close season works on the playing surface get under way this week.
The first goal went to the visitors when Coventry captain Natasha Lynch headed home a corner.
With 23 minutes on the clock, Coventry doubled their advantage despite a spell of good football from Pompey. Jade Brook side-footed home her shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
Three minutes later, however, Pompey pegged back the visitors with a well-deserved goal. It was a first Pompey goal for Alex Iusan, and the former Romanian international smashed the ball over the keeper and into the top corner of the goal – a contender for goal of the season for both the Portsmouth team and to anything else seen at Love Lane this year.
Coventry’s third goal came from a corner just before half time, when Callan Barber curled her cross straight into the net at the far post.
The Blues threw everything they had at the Southern Division’s second-placed team in the second half.
Samantha Quayle had two more chances in front of goal and in the dying moments Gemma Hillier was denied.
