Fewer vegetable and fruit entries at Hawkley show

THE RAIN didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for Empshott and Hawkley Horticultural Society’s summer show.

The show took place at Hawkley Village Hall and attracted 159 entries from 28 entrants.

Sue Rigby won the Rupert Howe Cup for the best in show, Judy Scott won the Lady Royden Challenge Cup and the RHS Banksian Medal, Robin Crittenden won the Sir Ralph Edwards Challenge Cup, Stella Savage won the Olive Baring Cup, Mary Crittenden won the Wright Cup and Tim Mullins won the Photography Cup.

Empshott and Hawkley Horticultural Society summer show secretary Stella Savage said: “Presumably due to the very hot weather in May and June the number of entries in the vegetable section was down on last year with some vegetables and soft fruits failing to make an appearance.

“The floral and cookery sections were well supported however, with high quality entries. The public also enjoyed the interesting photography submissions and the comments from the judge.”
