Paul Ullson, arguably one of the best children's and favourite historians visited St Matthew's School, Blackmoor, yesterday (Tuesday), when he magically brought to life historical fact and Biblical Gospel in the persona of a wise man from the east, 'Paulinus'.
The children had the opportunity to ask Paulinus questions, feel, smell and even burn exotic spices, such as myrrh and frankincense, handle replicas of artifacts – and draw the man himself, his clothing and equipment.

Older children became history detectives, delving into different editions and translations of the Bible to investigate whether there is really any historical evidence and facts to support the Nativity story.

Jane Kent, headteacher at St Matthew's, explained that Paul, known as The History Man, was an integral part of the school's teaching team, helping them bring to life other new learning themes such as 'Dinosaurs and Dragons', 'Pirates and a dead man's chest', 'Rock and Roll and what came next' and 'Fantastic Flight'.

She said: "I am very proud of my team's hard work in creating this new and exciting curriculum.

"It has given everyone energy and enthusiasm. We have some tried and tested themes, things that have been favourites with children from many generations along with other new and innovative ideas."

And she added: "The new curriculum fits in with the proposed new national curriculum, so it will be well established by the time we are called on to make the changes in 2011."

Jane Kent has worked alongside Paul Ullson for more than 10 years in a variety of schools and said she has always been impressed by the impact he has on children and their learning.

"St Matthew's looks forward to a happy and long partnership with him."
