The possibility of setting up a village shop and post office in a portable building at Greatham is to be investigated after it was announced that Greatham post office and Blackmoor Stores are to close.
Elwyn and Delma Evans, who currently run the businesses, have said that they will close the post office on March 25, and the shop three days later.

Their decision has dismayed Greatham residents, and 60 people attended a meeting to discuss the sit
uation at the village hall on Monday evening.

Parish council chairman Alan Bridgman said: "The meeting discussed the issues for about an hour and a half.

"It was decided to set up a sub committee to look into the possibilities.

"The problem will be finding a suitable site for a shop, and finding the money to finance such a venture."

Mr Bridgman stressed that the parish council would support the principal, but would not want to be directly involved in running a shop.

He said one possibility for Greatham would be to follow the example of Frensham in Surrey, where villagers formed their own group to set up and run a shop based in a portable building.

He added: "If 60 people turn up to a meeting, there is clearly interest in having a shop in the village and the sub committee will see how that can be achieved.

"It will look at whether a shop could be put in a portable cabin in the vicinity of the village hall."

When Greatham post office closes, the nearest branches will be at the Forest Centre in Bordon and in Liss.

A Post Office spokesman said: "Greatham Post Office branch will temporarily close on Wednesday, March 25 due to the current postmaster tendering their resignation, and the premises no longer being available for Post Office use.

We understand that the people of Greatham will be concerned about the future of Post Office services in their area.

"We will continue to work to find a solution that will provide a Post Office presence in the area."
