Proud to protect historic buildings
A campaign to save Whitehill and Bordon's historical buildings in the face of future house building has been started by a heritage group.
Woolmer Forest Heritage Society wants to keep all Whitehill and Bordon’s Edwardian era buildings intact once house building commences on MoD land when the Army leaves.
It is expected between 2,000 and 5,500 new homes are to be built after the Garrison moves to South Wales, so members are keen for any new development to retain the town’s character and sense of place.
Woolmer Forest Heritage Society trustee Dr Bill Wain said: “What we want to make sure is that whoever gets the chance to build the place does not just flatten everything.
“It should be more sympathetic, it should not be done as cheaply as possible.”
He felt similar large-scale developments at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth and Caversham barracks in Berkshire showed how successful retaining old military buildings alongside newer ones could be.
