BLACKMOOR AND WHITEHILL WI: This month's meeting of Blackmoor and Whitehill WI covered the Resolutions for this year.
The first resolution to be debated was 'Treatment & Therapy in a Suitable Residential Environment for the Mentally Ill Criminals'

At the moment the mentally ill suffering from personality disorders to schizophrenia are confined in normal prisons w
ith prison staff that have no suitable training.

There has been an increase in self harming and suicide, with a great deal being under 18-years-old.

It was debated that unjust imprisonment does nothing for their needs; in 2002 the government agreed that this was wrong, but nothing has been done to change things.

A discretionary vote was cast as members thought it was a difficult subject to give a for or against decision.

The second resolution was 'To Urge the EU to Ban Bottom Trawling on Seabeds' because of the catastrophic loss of marine life.

Many harrowing stories were told of dolphins and turtles being caught up in the nets. That the discard is over half of the catch thrown back dead into the sea.

Greenpeace say that bottom trawling ruins coral and many species of marine life, that over-fishing will soon cause no fishing.

In the Southern Pacific a quarter of the area has already banned it. Better nets that will allow bigger marine life to escape need to be designed. Everyone was in favour of this.

To lighten the meeting members broke for a refreshment break and followed this with a quiz.

The flower of the month had joint winners - Lynn Battersby-Vogt with her Acqualija and Margaret Gidley with her narcissus.

Forthcoming events include a trip to the Phoenix Theatre to see Blythe Spirit on May 23.
