Putting names to sporting faces

Some time ago – and by that I mean way back in March 2006 – we published some photographs of prep pupils' football and cricket teams at Churcher's College with an appeal for more information about the teams and their members.

I have now received a letter from David Savage, of Clockhouse Road in Farnborough, with just that information.

"These two photographs are of the pupils at Broadlands Prep School. That school was established by Jack Le Grice, a fine man who had been headmaster of Heath Harrison House, the prep school for Churcher's College.

"Heath Harrison House closed in 1946 and Broadlands, now Broadlands House near Kingsfernden Lane, was started. The photographs were taken in 1950.

"The football photograph shows, left to right back row first: Dudley Stratford, Tony Binsted, Dingle (there were four Dingle boys in the school, father an Old Churcherian was a farmer at Stroud), Southgate, Robin Smith, Nicholas Kerridge and Walker.

"Front row: Nixon, ?, Gilburd (a well-known and respected Petersfield family), Lambdin and Hetherington.

"The cricket photograph shows: Nixon, Munday, Park Weir (father an Old Churcherian), Dingle, Robin Smith, Lee, ?, ?, Walker, Lambdin, ? and Clayton.

"Many of us from those days at Broadlands are in touch with each other.

Although we were not all from Petersfield – for example, Stratford, Kerridge and Binsted were from Alton, Clayton from Havant, Lambdin from Woking and so on – I believe we enjoyed the school.

"The cutting from your paper was sent to me by Robin Knight who the other day met Gilburd who gave it to him."
