There's plenty to do this summer to keep children and parents happy.Libraries, museums, galleries, attractions and churches are all ofering family-friendly activities this school holiday.

And East Hampshire District Councill will be taking the R
APP van full of play equipment around schools and village halls – costing just £3 per child per session, while the Activ8d sports and performing arts activities are offered for older children and teenagers – completely free!

Petersfield Museum and the FloraTwort Gallery will be open throughout the summer holidays with plenty of activities and events.
July 27-30 is Roman Week at the museum, with the chance to make a Roman lamp or a mosaic. August 3-6 is Young Artists Week at the gallery, with the chance to try a range of art materials. August 10-13 is Glamorous Costumes Week at the gallery.Children can make a fan or a mask to take home. August 17-20 is Puppets Week, when children can make puppets at the gallery, while August 24-27 at the museum focuses on the Second World War when kids can dig for victory.Finally, from August 31 to September 3, it's Medieval Week. Children can make a crown or paint a stained glass bottle (this costs 50p).

All other activities are free and last around 30 minutes. If you go along in themed fancy dress you could win a prize.

The museum and gallery are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-4pm.
There are also explorer packs priced £1 to help families explore the museum and gallery exhibits and buildings.

From August 10 to the September 4 there will also be an exhibition of photography by local children entitled 'Through Our Eyes'. The exhibition will be on display in Petersfield Museum's Flora Twort Gallery.Call 01730 260756 for more details.

Throughout August, the Kings Theatre in Southsea has a programme of one-day and week-long theatre-based activities for seven to 14-year-olds that include workshops in dance, make-up, animation, art and television in association with Portsmouth TV Live, and the chance to attend a week long Performance and Technical Summer School to produce and perform in a special production of the musical 'HONK!', the adaptation of 'The Ugly Duckling'.

Aimed at those young people who want to work backstage in the production of a show, a week-long Technical Summer School will also give students a grounding in lighting and stage management.

Costing £130 per student, the Performance and Technical Summer School will run from August 2 to 6 between 9 am and 4 pm. The August all day theatre workshops in dance, make-up, art, animation and TV are for eight to 14-year-olds range from £15 to the TV week at £75.

Royal Armouries' Fort Nelson has a fun-packed programme of kids' low-cost events – featuring pirates, gladiators, commando courses, hunting hawks and even a Victorian flea circus!

Museum entrance is free for adults and children and includes a chance to view the nation's big gun collection, underground tunnels, and daily performances by the Fort's resident team of actors.

The children's low-cost events are priced at £2.50 per child, £1 for adults, or buy a family ticket for £5 (two adults and up to four children). There's no need to book – just drop in. The Fort opens at 10am and closes at 5pm.

The programme includes: Tuesday, July 27 – Animals in War – Discover the role of birds and animals in defending King and Country. From anti-spy falcons, who intercepted German carrier pigeons as they crossed the South Coast, to crime-busting police dogs (subject to operational duties); Thursday, July 29– Legends of Robin Hood –Be transported to Sherwood Forest with thrilling tales of bravery and action, and get a chance to dress up in medieval outfits, try your hand at real longbow archery and even build Nottingham Castle; Tuesday, August 3 – Battle of Britain – Train to become a pilot, become fighting fit on the assault course, learn about food rationing and even learn about RAF tactics; Thursday, August 5 - Leeches and Bonesaws – Forget about clean hospitals and friendly doctors! Battlefield surgery was gruesome – see blood-sucking leeches, operate on a medieval soldier and meet Florence Nightingale, as well as a real modern military medic showing first aid techniques; Tuesday, August 10 – Queen Victoria's Fleas – Come and see this Victorian flea circus recreate famous battles from history; Thursday, August 12 – Pirates Ahoy! – Learn more about the Golden Age of Piracy; Tuesday, August 17 – Gladiator Skool - Meet a fearsome Roman legionary, try on real armour, listen to ancient legends at the story-telling sessions, and learn to sword fight with foam swords; Thursday, August 19 – Raiders of the Lost Fort – be a movie hero and be part of the action, seeing snakes, scorpions and other exotic bugs and beasties; Tuesday, August 24 – Tales from the Tower – gruesome, gory tales from the Tower of London, and also get to meet a real 'Beefeater', dress up in Tudor clothes and take part in castle-building contests; Thursday, August 26 – Hunting Hawks and Creepy Crawlies – meet birds of prey, horrific creepy crawlies and even handle a tarantula; Sunday, August 29 and Monday 30 – Super Commando Kids – climbing wall and assault course, foam dart shooting range and a genuine armoured vehicle; Tuesday 31 – Legends of Robin Hood - get a chance to dress up in medieval outfits, try your hand at real longbow archery and even build Nottingham Castle; Thursday, September 2 – Battle of Britain - train to become a pilot, run the assault course, find out about food rationing and even learn about RAF tactics – all on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard can embark on a voyage through time, from Saturday, July 24 – Sunday, September 5.

The journey through the centuries includes Navy Days, taking place from July 30 – Sunday, August 1, when visitors can step aboard new Type 45 Destroyers – HMS Daring and HMS Dauntless – witness the RFA Argus, the Royal Navy's smallest vessel HMS Gleaner, the French Navy's patrol vessel FS Cormoran as well as thrilling naval displays and historical re-enactments.

During the school summer holidays visitors can start their journey in the 1500s to discover more about historical figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Henry VIII and a Tudor doctor at the Mary Rose Museum, making their way through time to learn about Victorian sailors and seaside holidays on board HMS Warrior 1860, handling objects used on board HMS Victory and bringing the journey to an end by learning about the aircraft carriers of the future at Action Stations.

The activities include free drop in workshops and activities that are free with a valid Historic Dockyard ticket.
The Royal Marines School of Music will be performing at the Historic Dockyard in the summer period from approximately 1.30pm alongside the main entrance on Tuesday August 10 and Thursday 12.
