Michael Hurd Memorial Fund first award
Martin Elsey is the first recipient of an award from the Petersfield Musical Festival's Michael Hurd Memorial Fund.
The fund, which aims to encourage local young people to create and perform music of all kinds, was launched at this year's Festival.
Martin lives in Petersfield and attended Churcher's College; he begins the second year of a foundation degree course at the University of Chichester in September.
The award will further his plans for a career in brass music teaching, specialising in the trumpet and cornet.
The fund was set up in memory of the internationally respected composer and writer Michael Hurd (1928 – 2006), in recognition of his encouragement and support of young musicians and his lifelong contribution to music in Petersfield. Its purpose is to encourage young people within the catchment area of the Petersfield Musical Festival to create and perform music of all kinds. Applicants need to be 25 years of age or under and actively engaged in studying music.
