Potts at the Proms - July 19
MOBILE phone salesman-turned-opera singer Paul Potts has been jetting around the world since finding fame on ITV1's hit show Britain's Got Talent.
And now, fresh from the fast-paced cities of New York, Toronto and Atlantic City, after a tour which has seen him perform 77 shows in 13 countries in 145 days his next engagement is in... Rowlands Castle – for the Stansted Park Proms.
The concert will allow him a short break in the UK before packing his bags for glamorous L.A. to finish recording his album, due to be released in time for Christmas. From there, he will make his way to Sweden before gracing South East Asia in the autumn.
Originally hailing from Bristol, the TV talent show star will be returning to an area dear to his heart, as he has been a frequent visitor to family and friends in the Portsmouth area in the past.
And he hopes his parents will be able to show their support at the Proms next weekend.
The former Carphone Warehouse manager said that he got with a warm reception in all 13 countries he visited. He received particular interest in Germany where he is currently starring in a television commercial for the German equivalent of phone company T-Mobile.
The advert features Paul singing at his Britain's Got Talent audition in front of a tearful audience, with the tagline, 'Making a Connection'.
He said: "I haven't really seen the German ad but there has been a mind-boggling reaction to it and I've had messages from Germans on the web and on Youtube."
The successful singer says he has been completely overwhelmed by the scale of his success since his 2007 win – an achievement made all the more amazing by his admission that he had not planned to apply to any other shows and had he not made it past the first stage of Britain's Got Talent, he would probably still be in the phone-selling job that he gave up for fame.
He claims that he is not really one to take risks, so entering Britain's Got Talent after a break from singing was something completely out of character. And despite his show-stopping performances the world over, he still feels nervous before performing and gets the same buzz now as the first time he sang opera.
When asked whether it was more nerve-racking to perform in front of Luciano Pavarotti or Simon Cowell, he said: "Simon made me more nervous, not just because he is 100 per cent honest but because I had not sung for four years before that."
As its first winner, he is a big fan of the show and thinks that it attracts a wide variety of acts.
Commenting on this year's champion, George Sampson, who performed a winning dance routine to a remix of the Gene Kelly hit Singin' in the Rain, he said: "George worked incredibly hard at his act and came back to prove himself, which shows determination. I have a lot of respect for him." The fourteen year old dancer recently claimed Paul Potts to be his hero.
The Britain's Got Talent 2007 winner will be performing at the Stansted Park Proms in Rowlands Castle on July 19, 2008.
Also appearing on Saturday is the London Gala Orchestra. Tickets are £22 for adults, £11 for children.
