Olympic flag raised with pride

Festivities organiser Philip Haines felt the weekend had been superb, with the handover of the Olympic flag one of his favourite moments: "We have been overwhelmed with the response to this weekend's second Petersfield Festivities – over 15,000 visitors enjoyed a wide range of free activities and entertainment on offer. 'I have never seen so many people in The Square' - as former mayor Elsa Bulmer said.
“Our aim was to produce an event bigger and better than the inaugural festivities, with a theme of Petersfield at its Best.
“Highlights included the Olympic handover, the performance of local band Rumour Has It to close Sunday evening – and all the live music, Petersfield Youth Theatre’s preview of its three upcoming shows, and the mountain bike jump displays, as well as all of the other contributions by individuals, clubs, societies and companies.
“We believe that we have again demonstrated that the heart of Petersfield belongs to the people, and with a bit of imagination, an event that has something to appeal to everyone can be created, and delivered. Inevitably with success - 50% more visitors than our Food Festival, and four times last year’s festivities, there will be growth issues, and we will be looking at how event facilities can be improved in the future.
“The organisers would like to thank the generosity of their sponsors – businesses in the town, the volunteers who gave so generously of their time and skills, the whole crew involved in live performances, the support of EHDC including a fantastic clean up operation each day.”
