CAMPAIGNERS gathered in The Square on Sunday to add their voice to calls demanding Petersfield be included in the Western Weald.
The protest rally, organised by the South Downs Campaign, included a message from actress Honeysuckle Weeks, best known for her role as Samantha Stewart in Foyle's War, who grew up in the area near Petworth.
She said: "I was very lucky to grow up
in the Western Weald, in sight of the Downs and cannot think of a place that I would rather be. It is a fantastic and precious area and truly deserves the highest possible protection that a national park can bring."
While the event was held in Petersfield more than 60 people came from all over Sussex, Hampshire and parts of Surrey to show their support.
East Hampshire MP Michael Mates urged people to go out and collect signatures on the petition which he would present to Parliament in December.
People could see for themselves the beauty of the area at risk of being left out of the South Downs National Park with a Ramblers' Association walk following the rally.
Tom Franklin, chief executive of the Ramblers' Association said: "It would be bizarre if the government approved a national park for the South Downs with a big bite, the Western Weald, missing from it. We've waited 61 years for this national park and we want the real thing, not a watered-down version."
Robin Crane, chairman of the South Downs Campaign, said: "We are immensely grateful to Honeysuckle Weeks. It is a further boost to our campaign which continues to attract widespread public support.
"Our thanks also go to Tom Franklin, the new chief executive for the Ramblers, and to Michael Mates for attending.
"We had a good turnout with people from all over Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey keen that the Government realises just how strong feeling is on this issue.
"As Honeysuckle Weeks has said, the Government only has one chance of getting this right.
"Therefore it must include the Western Weald in the South Downs National Park."
