THE SOUTH Downs Campaign was disbanded on Tuesday after 20 years campaigning for a national park.
The pressure group, which was rewarded for its perseverance when the government confirmed the South Downs National Park in November, was wound up at its final conference in Chichester.
At its height, the South Downs Campaign consisted of a network of 160 different organisations, including key national and regional environmental groups, 28 parish councils and 90 local groups, societies and organisations. Ex-members of the South Downs Campaign now expect the interests of the national park to be looked after by the incoming National Park Authority.
Former South Downs Campaign chairman Robin Crane said: "This has been a long, hard fight, but we never gave in. It has been that perseverance, along with the overwhelming public support, that helped us win the day.
"I have enjoyed my time immensely and have worked with many totally committed and tireless people along the way."
