HISTORY enthusiasts enjoyed a Petersfield treat at The Petersfield Society's Heritage Open Day.
A dozen people took a tour of historical properties in The Spain, where Hampshire medieval houses expert Edward Roberts acted as a guide.
He explained the concept of open hall constructions characterised by Tullys and 15 The Spain, which date from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Society chairman David Jeffery said: "By contrast another property, Goodyers, originally 'The Great Hall' and also dating from the 15th century, had been considerably modernised by the botanist John Goodyer in the 17th century, when he was given the property by Bishop Bilson of Winchester, whom he served as steward.
"The visit to Goodyers revealed the new concept of the 'lobby entry' house, whereby the parlour and staircase could be accessed past a partition, which avoided contact with the servants and the kitchen.
"The guide explained these changes were brought about by Goodyer for the benefit of his new wife in 1632.
"Goodyers therefore represents a transition period in architectural history."
