The Heath or The Square are being considered as possible venues for a youth shelter in Petersfield.
Town councillors are examining the benefits of a shelter where the town's youngsters can gather without causing problems for other residents.

Councillors discussed the sensitive issue of potential locations for such shelter at their meeting last Thursday.

Town clerk Neil Hitch, said: "The Heath is one of the areas mooted as a possible site by the police.

"They were going to talk again to the youngsters to see if they have a preferred site, not just on The Heath but elsewhere in the town."

Councillor Hilary Ayer said: "If it went on The Heath it would be best on the corner of the junction between Heath Road and Heath Road West. "At the moment they have terrible trouble with young people gathering at the steps at the end of The Avenue so a shelter would move them away from there to where they can be observed."

The shelter, which would provide a lit and covered area for youngsters to meet, must be in an observable position to allow residents and police to keep an eye on it.
