THERE are plans for more than £2m to be spent on the Quebec Barracks in Bordon to make way for up to 100 eco-town houses.

The site is expected to be developed by the Homes and Communities Agency, which is the national housing and regeneration agency for England.

The government-led group are currently in discussions with the MoD about purchasing the newly vacated site.

The agency will continue to try to achieve Bordon’s green vision by making the houses both affordable and eco-friendly.

A Homes and Communities Agency spokesman said: “If the terms of the acquisition can be agreed, the HCA would then work with East Hampshire District Council, the town council and the local community to progress the project.

“One of the aims of this project will be to create a statement development with high visual impact that demonstrates the Eco-town Vision.”

However, the work cannot begin as there are still calls for a developer to come forward to come up with a more detailed plan as to what should be placed on the site.

The recently revised masterplan has called for both social and private housing in Bordon. The Quebec Barracks is one of the first sites to be released and Whitehill Town Council sees this as a massive step forward for the town’s regeneration.

Mayor Adam Carew said: “This will be the first area that is built upon and it is essential that it is exemplary in every way.

“Locally we have made it clear that we need to see far more larger houses here to help rebalance the socio-demographic of the area, which is essential if we want to attract more shops and leisure facilities.

“The site being developed by the Homes and Communities Agency is also fantastic news as it means there will be extra funding to meet the very highest eco standards.”

There will also be an improved new crossing on the A325 to link the barracks to the community facilities, as well as discussions about employment and leisure opportunities on the site.
