TWENTY years after Carl Tantum had the idea of supporting local good causes through establishing a charity shop selling donated goods, his dedication, which has led to nearly £1m being distributed by the Bordon Liphook Haslemere Charity, has been rewarded with him being made MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Carl said: “I am absolutely astounded – it is such a great honour. Not only for me, of course, but for all those associated with the charity – the volunteers, the trustees and the management team.

“It is a recognition of the important work the charity undertakes in the community. It is humbling and just amazing.”

The Bordon Liphook Haslemere Charity started at the Elizabeth Dibben Centre in Pinehill Road, moving three years later to 15 The Forest Centre, thanks to encouragement and a grant of £8,000 by social services.

In May 1999 a loan from the then-named Bordon Charity was made to ‘Liphook Care’, enabling a second charity shop to open at 23 Station Road Liphook. Two years later, the Haslemere charity shop was opened in Shepherds Hill and the organisation was renamed to cover the three areas.

In total, the shops which finance the charity have turned over more than £1.7m and, after paying their way, have enabled it to make grants of more than £800,000, with another £100,000 in the Bordon and Liphook Endowment Fund, which enables £5,000 a year of grants to be made in perpetuity. Currently, the self-fundiing charity gives out more than £60,000 a year.

Carl, who is the founder and retired chairman of Headley Financial Services, based at Alton, lives at Headley. He is chairman of the Trojan vintage car club and a member of his church choir.

He has been involved in a number of other charitable and voluntary organisations over the years. These include SVP Care – the Catholic Care Group and SVP Ambulance Appeal, forerunner of Community Transport – Bordon and Oakhanger Sports Club, Bordon and Whitehill Chamber of Commerce, Bordon and Whitehill Sports Council, Forest Centre Tenants Association, Bordon Harlequins Hockey Club, Charities Interaction Group and Advisory Board Furniture Helpline.
