DON’T be downhearted or think nothing’s happening to turn Bordon into a flagship eco-community – that’s the upbeat message from new project director Steve Pearce.

Speaking to the Bordon Post, Mr Pearce, who has amassed a wealth of experience in regeneration projects, says he is confident that in the next year or so there will be clarity and more examples of theory being turned into practice.

Mr Pearce took over in February from Daphne Gardner, who retired from the role.

He said: “With the amount of land becoming available through the Army leaving, it is an almost unprecedented opportunity to create new development in this beautiful area and to make lives better both for the people who are here now and those who move in.”

He is conscious that much of the work on the eco-town plans has been going on in the background but says that now there will be much more opportunity for the public and bodies such as the town council to comment upon and inform planning and other decisions. He added: “Meanwhile, I accept there are issues in the town itself and I will be working on these through the town council.

“It’s a continuing challenge to get more people involved and I want to identify those in the town who have benefited from schemes such as where we have helped with obtaining grants for insulation.

“I’d like to find some ‘local champions.’”

He said there would be opportunities for the public to comment on designs of the first homes to be built on the Quebec Barracks site, construction of which is due to start at the end of 2014.

As regards new jobs in the area, Mr Pearce said: “I would like to attract prestige employers but it is equally important to support small businesses.”

He is also aware of the infrastructure problems of Bordon and Whitehill and says he wants to find ways of bringing together the councils and other community services to work in a more co-ordinated way.

“I can’t make promises for services which are out of my control but I want to develop creative ways of using existing resources,” said Mr Pearce.
