PLANS for a terrace of homes in Buriton have angered neighbouring residents.

Formerly of Buriton House, Keith Barnett of Miscombe Developments wants to demolish cottages in North Lane and build four starter homes.

Matthew Pardoe of Signet Planning said: “The site comprises a pair of semi-detached properties which would be replaced with a small terrrace of four houses built in local materials and style to provide much needed starter, or family, homes. The proposal enhances the site whilst meeting a need for smaller units, and takes full account of their relationship with their surroundings.”

But residents say it will create traffic problems in the narrow lane, that it is too big, and that the houses won’t be cheap.

North Lane resident Therese Hart says the lane is a rat run for drivers leaving the A3 at Buriton and heading toward Chichester.

She said: “Cars park on the road making it, in effect, single lane. More residents with more cars is a foolish and dangerous plan. Buriton is a small and peacefull village –let’s keep it that way.”

Neighbour Tim Harwood said the new terrace would overshadow its surroundings.

He said: “We strongly object to the huge increase in the overall size of the development. It looks to be about twice the size of what is there now.”

Chris Byers of North Lane used to live in Selborne and says local people there couldn’t afford to buy similar houses built by another developer as part of a bigger estate.

He said: “It has to be noted; no local could afford them. My other objections include the sheer size of the terrace, and the increase of people driving to and from the houses.”
