Carew speaks out over Asda bid rejection
WITH plans to build an Asda at a standstill, Hampshire county councillor Adam Carew has hit back at East Hampshire District Council planning committee for turning down the proposed supermarket.
As news broke of the council’s decision to turn down Asda’s planning proposal, Alton opened a fifth supermarket in the town.
Cllr Carew said: “Waitrose will be a wonderful boost to Alton but it will be small comfort to residents of Whitehill and Bordon who have just been told by EHDC that they cannot have an Asda.
“Supermarkets tend to compete against each other and if councillors were worried about our town losing trade to Liphook, Petersfield and Alton supermarkets, there will be just another incentive now to shop else where.
“I had very little in the way of letters and emails for or against Asda in the run up to the application but I have been inundated with angry emails afterwards.
“What our residents find difficult to understand is why EHDC planning committee, which is comprised of non local Conservative councillors, turned it down, when our local town council voted strongly in favour of it.
“So much for localism.
“Whether Asda appeal is a matter for them but they have put a lot of money into this application and I would be shocked if they don’t.”
