Christmas card shop open to help causes

Petersfield's charity Christmas card shop opened this week

It used to be famous for moving to a new home every year - but for once Petersfield’s charity Christmas card shop is staying put.

The shop opened for business on Monday morning in the top floor meeting room at Petersfield library, the same venue as last year.

And, within minutes, it had welcomed its first customers.

The Cards for Good Causes shop has been a feature of Petersfield life since the first one was organised by Hilda Gammon in 1969. Since then it has re-emerged every autumn, often taking over vacant shops or offices for a few weeks.

“It is lovely to be back in the library which is warm and friendly and right in the middle of the town,” said manager Phil Willoughby.

“It’s wonderful that we had five or six customers first thing on Monday, although it is so early and it was raining.”

The shop was officially opened by the mayor of Petersfield, Cllr Mary Vincent.

This year, it offers the chance to buy cards from 35 national and local charities.

Phil said: “As we are part of the UK’s largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation and offer a choice of around 250 card designs, it’s an ideal way to support many good causes. Customers can also buy a variety of gifts, wrapping paper and tags.

“The Petersfield shop is one of a network of Cards for Good Causes (CFGC) shops which open in the run-up to the festive season.

“CFGC pays the participating charities (or their trading subsidiaries) at least 75p in every pound from their card sales, less the VAT payable on the amount retained by CFGC.

“The retained amount covers CFGC’s costs of running the temporary shops. In addition to these costs, participants have to pay for the production and distribution of their cards.”

The Petersfield Cards for Good Causes shop is on the top floor of Petersfield library, and is accessible by lift.

It will be open from Monday to Friday, 9.30am-4.30pm, and on Saturdays from 9.30am-12.30pm, until just before Christmas.
