A concert in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice will celebrate the life and music of Ian Morrish, who lived in Bentley and died at the hospice last November.
It will be hosted by the Alton Concert Band, the Lydian Singers and the Woking Wind Orchestra, all of which Ian was involved with after a career with the RAF music services.
He began working for Surrey County Arts in 1977 and became head of South West Surrey Music Centre, a position held until retirement in 2001. During that time he chaired the Woking Wind Orchestra, in which he played euphonium and trombone. In August 2012 Ian became musical director of the Alton Concert Band, a post he held until October 2022. Ian directed the Lydian Singers from 1991 until retirement after 30 years.
Ian’s son Jeremy took over as musical director for the Alton Concert Band and the Lydian Singers while also being musical director of the Woking Wind Orchestra.
The concert, at St Andrew’s Garrison Church in Aldershot on October 14 at 7pm, will present choral and band works, including some of Ian and his family’s most loved music plus works Ian arranged and composed. It will feature a piece for Ian by Rob Wiffin, retired principal director of music for the RAF music services. Tickets £15 (children free) from https://altonconcertband.co.uk/
