Debate on care home ahead of open meeting
THE Post can reveal that, although a conclusion hasn’t been reached over the demolition of a Petersfield care home, plans are being made for residents to leave.
Hampshire County Council (HCC), which owns Bulmer House, says it needs a £2.5m modernisation, and that it would make sense to level the site and have privately run assisted care living flats built on the land.
The Post has learned that even though a consultation into the plan isn’t completed, county social services is preparing residents to move out of the home at Rams Hill and into private care and nursing homes. The Save Bulmer House Committee wants the demolition idea scrapped.
Committee spokesman Dilys Lownsborough said: “Talking to the residents before a decision is announced raises a number of issues about the consultation.
“We believe Bulmer House is fine – neither residents nor relatives have lodged any complaints about it.
“We are all happy with it and would argue it certainly doesn’t need to be demolished.”
The group says in the past ten years the council has closed homes wherever possible and replaced them with private care homes, however vociferous the opposition.
Mrs Lownsborough said: “I asked about this and none have stayed open, despite strong protests in some cases.”
Three other Hampshire care homes are being considered for closure in this round of consultations, and there has been widespread protest about the plans. There have been complaints that consultation guidelines aren’t being followed, and that some reports being used to justify the closures are no longer relevant.
But the council insists the homes are out of date and need replacing. It says that it aims to provide the best elderly care possible and assisted care living units meet all the criteria.
It says all opinions and views will be considered before a decision is announced in November. County council leader Cllr Roy Perry is to attend a public meeting to hear residents’ views about Bulmer House at 7pm on Monday, September 30, in the Petersfield Festival Hall Rose Room.
