Expert to dig into town’s history
JPPP-28-03-12 PET-BARROWS barrows on Petersfield Heath - plans to do an archaeological dig there
ONE of the experts working to uncover the origins of Petersfield Heath burial barrows is launching an archaeological society in the town.
Peter Price of Sussex Road says there is an enormous amount of history buried in the town and surrounding countryside waiting to be discovered.
The experienced lecturer in archaeology said: “There are Roman villas at Stroud and Froxfield, another Roman site nearby along Ridge Hanger Lane, and does the road that would have connected them run through Petersfield and if so where exactly? There is also an iron age settlement out past Langrish, and that is just a few sites.”
If the society gets off the ground one potential project could be digging test pits in gardens of older Petersfield homes.
Mr Price said: “Iron age relics, pottery and bone shards, could all be found which would help chart the past and give a clearer insight into it, and could even reveal links with the Heath barrows.”
The first meeting of the Petersfield Archaeological Society is at 7.30pm on January 23, in the Flora Twort Gallery. For information contact Mr Price on 07846465392.
