AN annual gala evening hosted by a town business has brought the total collected for injured marines by a local father to almost £250,000.
Organised by Clive and Monica Waller of Petersfield-based CWC Research , the prestigious event raised almost £27,000, which was handed to Robin Hollington of Stroud last Thursday.
Mr Hollington said: “The money is going to a Help for Heroes fund to give injured marines business training so they can get a job based on their skills.”
The fund is named after his son Royal Marine Richard Hollington, who was the 300th serviceman killed in Afghanistan. So far Robin and his family have helped raise almost a quarter of a million for the charity, dedicated to helping armed forces personnel injured on active duty.
But even though the war is drawing to a close, with the withdrawal over the next 18 months of most British servicemen, the committment to the injured will be ongoing, says Mr Hollington.
He said: “Those with significant injuries are restricted to a degree in what they can do, and won’t be mobile in the job world and will need ongoing help for a long time, especially in the field of new prosthetic limbs, which will become ever more expensive, and mental health.
“More servicemen committed suicide after the Falklands war than were killed in it, and that can’t be allowed to happen again.
“Twenty years down the road, the mental and physical injuries will still be there.”
The latest generous donation was from businessmen at the Aberdeen UK Platform Awards evening at the London Marriot Hotel.
The evening was compered by TV news reader Kate Silverton, and Royal Marine Max Hancox, wounded in Afghanistan, who spoke about the needs of injured personnel in being equipped to support themselves.
The dinner brought the total raised for Help for Heroes by the annual event to £61,000.
CWC director Clive Waller said: “Whilst the evening is to reward success and achievement in the investment world, we believe guests having such a good time should be able to find money for those in greater need. Table donations were matched by CWC, and sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management generously gave £10,000.”
