Councillors plea to save Chase beds

Save the beds at the Chase Community Hospital, was the plea made by town and district councillor, Adam Carew as he attended a meeting at Hampshire County Council on Tuesday, September 25 to discuss the future of the Chase.

The Chase League of Friends has also put out a petition so that residents can have their say as to whether they want to see the beds at the Chase go.

Cllr Carew said: “We welcome the work currently being undertaken by the PCT with the local community stakeholders of Whitehill and Bordon and clinical commissioning group to put Chase Hospital, in Whitehill and Bordon on a firm footing for the future, through the provision of additional services.

“However, we have raised our concerns that the Chase Hospital has been under utilised for years, promised services have not be delivered and only 8 of 24 possible allocated beds are currently in use.

“This council notes that a key part of the proposals for regeneration would result in the closure of the Macawain ward and re-hiring of beds at a care home in Liss until an 80 bed nursing home can be built in the town. And there isn’t even a bus service that goes to Liss currently in place in the town.

“There are local concerns that once the beds are removed they could be lost for ever, even if a site is allocated in planning terms, there can be no guarantee that a care home will be built quickly, if at all.

“It is therefore resolved that the leader of the council, leader of the opposition, the Chief Executive and Chairman write collectively cross party to the PCT, Southern Health and Hampshire County Council’s Health Overview and Scrutiny to express our concerns and asks the PCT to re-examine alternatives including the retention of beds at Chase Hospital until such time they can be provided elsewhere in the town.”

Cllr Carew proposed these points be taken into consideration when Hampshire County Council come to vote on the decision later on in the year.

The Chase League of Friends petition is available from the Forest Community Centre.
