Historic building could make way for new outlets
Chapel street premises - planning application to convert it to shops and flats
PLANS to demolish a former Petersfield town centre supermarket and redevelop it as three smaller shops with five flats above are being considered by planners.
The old International Store site runs alongside Hobbs Lane from its frontage on Chapel Street to the Waitrose supermarket delivery yard.
Developers Luken Beck of Carlton Crescent in Southampton hope to demolish the building frontage and rebuild it, to create three shops with five one bedroom flats above.
The unlisted building is in Petersfield Conservation Area has been empty for a number of years, and there are three supports from the shop to buildings the on other side of Hobbs Lane helping to stabilise it. East Hampshire District Council has already agreed the back of the site could be redeveloped.
Now it is proposed to clear the whole site, as it would cost too much to save the historic shop front. But developers say the proposed frontage is almost an exact replica of the old one.
A Luken Beck spokesman said: “Attempts have been made in the past to modernise and reburbish parts of the building without success. It’s in poor repair and could become an eyesore if no solution is found . We believe this application will deliver a viable modern replacement building enhancing the conservation area.”
