Housing estate fears for green space near lane

RESIDENTS of a Petersfield cul-de-sac fear land between it and another road could become a busy estate.
Merryfield Road householders are worried the green space between Merryfield Road, off Love Lane, and Shear Hill, the entrance of which is near the Rams Hill roundabout, could be used for housing.
They say it isn’t earmarked for houses in local planning strategies, but claim that if plans for a stable conversion at the end nearest to Pulens Lane are agreed, it could open the rest up for an estate.
Resident Bruce Hart said: “If this is allowed it may mean in time the whole strip of land could be used for housing; perhaps up to 60 homes could go in there.”
It is feared that any potential developers would want to build a site entrance at the end of Merryfield Road, so turning the quiet cul-de-sac into a rat run for estate traffic. In April 2011, owners of some of the land withdrew plans for such an entrance, after objections.
The land owners wanted to sell a house on Shear Hill from which the land was accessed, and needed another entrance to look after an orchard.
