Job seekers get help in tough times
A JOBS fair in Petersfield attracted scores of job hunters as fears about benefit cuts next April grow.
The event in Petersfield Library is part of a drive across East Hampshire to help unemployed and part time workers back into full work and further education before the government driven cuts are introduced.
Event co-ordinator Janice Waterman of Radian social housing group said: “It was designed to help people with their confidence and get them into the workplace. Soon, benefits will be cut and those who rely on them will struggle – we want to avoid that. There are jobs here, so we are helping people to find and secure them.”
The East Hampshire District Council event brought together companies, training professionals, housing associations and business owners, to offer advice and guidance. On a practical note, Wetherspoons were offering 15 jobs and Petersfield’s Bluebird Care care agency a dozen.
Petersfield man Christopher Mort (39) has two part-time jobs, but said he desperately needs to boost his income. He said: “This has given me the help I need to go for a full time job.”
Highbury College staff were also there to discuss further education, as a third of local unemployed people are under 24. But even so it is feared that after April, unemployed and low earners will struggle, and the district council is supporting other initiatives to try get them jobs. Free work clubs run by Petersfields’ Community First HEH are starting at Alton Community Centre and The Kings Arms youth centre in the Festival Hall car park in Petersfield. They offer a range of opportunities from networking to back to work courses, and help with CVs. The Alton club is every second and fourth Wednesday and the Petersfield one every first and fourth Thursday. Contact The Volunteer Centre on 01730 710017.
