Morrisons Local plan submitted
FRESH plans for a supermarket in Petersfield have met with instant opposition from some residents.
Morrisons has announced it aims to open ‘Morrisons M Local’ in Swan Street, underneath flats built where Vertigo nightclub used to be.
Swan Street resident Hilary Bonney said: “Although it’s one way, Swan Street is busy and this would cause all sorts of traffic and parking problems.”
Morrisons has now applied to sell alcohol from 6am until midnight, seven days a week.
Dave Howarth of Lower Bordean said: “Another convenience store will affect independent shops, and as there is already one in town I don’t think it is needed.”
Applying for an alcohol licence is cheaper than submitting plans for a store, and if East Hampshire District Council gives the proposal the green light, it will unlock the door for a store application.
The Bradford-based chain recently said it aimed to open 70 such stores in the south east by summer. A spokesman said: “They usually employ 15 to 20 staff, and place emphasis on fresh food, and often sell freshly ground coffee, pastries and have a salad bar.”
