Music boost for hall despite concerns

A Masonic hall has been allowed to play music later in the evening despite a concern about noise.

The Centrepoint, in Five Heads Road, Horndean, applied to East Hampshire District Council to extend its licence for entertainment and alcohol from 11pm to 11.45pm.

But one local resident who lives nearby objected to the plans on the grounds of noise.

A council report said: “He had not experienced any problems relating to the masonic use of the hall, but had been subjected to loud music from events held at the hall when it had been hired by others.

“He explained that the hall was an old building, built at around the turn of the 20th century. It was not soundproofed and was never designed for music. As such it could not contain noise, particularly loud disco music.”

Hall officials told a licensing committee in Petersfield that the only music during masonic events was the singing of the national anthem.

The committee decided music could be played until 11.30pm and alcohol could be sold until 11.45pm.

A statement said: “The proximity of the hall to private dwellings increases the potential for public nuisance caused by noise.

“As a result, bearing in mind the interests of local residents, we have decided that it is appropriate to restrict terminal hours to 11.30pm for music and dance.”
