New name for once-Friendly club open to village

A long established social club has been given a new lease of life – "under new management."

The former Liss Friendly Club is now the Liss Village Club.

And organisers are hoping that a change of name will help to attract more members.

Meetings will continue to be held on the first Wednesday of the month at Liss village hall – and the first gathering of the new year last week welcomed five new members.

"We had 28 people there, which was good, but the club used to get 50 or 60 people and I would love to see us getting back to that," said Ruth Hiller, who has taken over as chairman from Lilian Heightley.

The Liss Friendly Club was founded during the second world war as a social organisation for wives whose husbands were away on active service.

It continued after the war as a club where women could get together on a regular basis
