Parish councillors hopeful for new pavilion

A DECISION is expected within the next few days on planning permission for a community pavilion at West Liss recreation ground.

Plans have been with South Downs National Park planning authority since last year, and Liss Parish Council is optimistic that it is about to give the go-ahead.

That will be the signal for the council to apply for further grants to fund the ambitious project.

If it goes ahead, the new pavilion will replace the existing 40-year-old building at West Liss recreation ground, and the neighbouring Scout hut.

Parish councillor Keith Budden, who is heading the working party which is seeing the scheme through, said: “We have heard verbally from the planning officer that we have satisfied all of the conditions, and we should receive formal planning permission within the next seven to ten days.”

A spokeswoman for SDNP planning authority said: “The application is being dealt with by East Hampshire District Council on our behalf. A decision is pending.”

Successful applications have already been made by the parish council for a number of grants, including £62,000 from East Hampshire District Council.

Local fundraising has included a ‘buy a brick for £5’ appeal, which has been well supported by individual residents and businesses.

Model railway enthusiasts will be contributing by holding an open afternoon at Liss village hall on April 5, and there will be a raffle on Liss village day on June 8 and a duck race on September 14.

l New play facilities are to be installed at the children’s playground at Newman Collard Playing fields. Parish council chairman Howard Linsley said that a zip wire and climbing frame would be put in next to the tennis courts “hopefully by the summer.”

l Cllr Linsley paid tribute to Gina Logan who has stepped down as vice chairman of the parish council and as a district councillor for Liss. She and her husband are moving to the New Forest.

“She will be sorely missed, particularly for her work on the Village Voice newsletter,” he said. “The council has asked the clerk to write a letter of thanks.”

Cllr Budden has taken her place as vice chairman, and a new parish councillor is being sought. A by election for the vacant seat on East Hampshire District Council will be held on Thursday, May 2, the same day as the Hampshire County Council elections.
