Police appeal for crash witnesses
A POLICE motorcyclist was left critically injured after a crash on the road between Four Marks and Chawton.
The incident happened while the 40-year-old officer was on duty riding along the south bound lane of the A31.
He was on his way to a separate motorbike crash on the north bound carriageway in which the rider was also injured.
The police BMW bike with its distinctive livery was in collision with a yellow Audi S3, and the officer sustained serious injuries, thought at first to be life threatening.
He was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital but his condition has stabilised since the crash, although he remains in hospital.
Senior investigating officer Inspector Richard Parsons said: “He is in a critical but stable condition and Hampshire Constabulary is grateful for the swift and considerable assistance of the other emergency services.
“His immediate family members have been informed.”
The 40-year-old Audi driver from Four Marks wasn’t injured, but was arrested at the roadside afterwards on suspicion of dangerous driving.
He was questioned at Basingstoke Police Station, and later bailed without charge until Sunday, May 5, while the crash investigation continues.
Inspector Parsons said: “The investigation is to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision.
“A section of the road was closed for six hours while forensic officers examined the road and verges.”
Traffic divertions were in place until the road re-opened around 8pm on the evening of the dry, but chilly, day.
Although it is believed no other vehicles were directly involved in the crash, Inspector Parsons is asking for any witnesses to the collision to contact police as a matter of urgency.
He said: “We would like to thank those witnesses who have given information and statements already, but we believe more motorists on the road would have seen the collision, or both vehicles in the moments before the impact.
“Some of these drivers may have been commuters travelling in and out of Hampshire along the A31.”
Witnesses who saw either the crash at 1.55pm on Monday, February 4, or one, or both, of the vehicles before it are asked to contact Sergeant Darren Ord of Roads Policing Unit at Cosham Police Station.
He can be contacted on 101, and callers should quote Operation Bricklin as a reference.Mini com users should contact 01962 875000, and information can also be given anonymously via the Crimstoppers Hotline, on 0800 555 111.
