Project Vernon to commemorate naval divers was outlined

Details of a project to commemorate Royal Navy divers at a former naval shore base in Portsmouth were outlined at a meeting of the Liss and District branch of the Royal Naval Association.

The proposed monument is to be put up at Gunwharf Quays, formerly HMS Vernon.

Project manager David Carey, who was welcomed by branch chairman Bob Dean, said it was not intended as a tribute to any particular branch but would commemorate the mine warfare and diving activities associated with HMS Vernon throughout its history.

These included wartime mining and mine counter measures activities, and the deep divers, ships' divers and clearance divers who were based at HMS Vernon.

The Rev Alan Geddes, chaplain of the Liss branch of the RNA, trained as a Roval Navy rating at HMS Vernon, and branch standard bearer Simon Sillence was a ships' diver there.
