PARISH councillors are to make a site visit before finalising their views on plans to build houses on the site of a Liss Forest church.

St Saviour’s in Forest Road has been boarded up since the final service was held there in March. A previous plan for homes and a church community building following the demolition of the church was approved, but developers are now seeking planning consent for four houses only.

Their proposals have been submitted to East Hampshire District Council and South Downs National Park planning authority which will consider the views of Liss Parish Council’s planning committe.

The committee heard from the architect of the scheme, Mr Nick Tsiknas, and ojectors, including Michael and Susan Rose, who live in Pine Walk, next to the church. They say the proposed new houses are too big for the site, and would have an “oppressive” effect on their home. Mrs Rose said the previous proposed scheme had been redesigned because of the effect it would have had on the natural light.

Objections have also been raised about the possibility of parking problems being caused in Forest Road. John Weston, of Liss Forest Residents’ Association, said: “I realise there are three parking spaces for each house, but people are always likely to take the easier way and park on Forest Road.”

Mr Tsiknas said that that the plans for two pairs of semi-detached houses had been examined at a pre consultation with East Hampshire’s planning department.

He added: “We are presenting what we believe is a high quality scheme which will sit very well in this part of Liss.”

Margaret Effenberg, chairman of Liss Village Design Group described the design as “fairly good” but added: “We feel the building is very bulky for that site.”

Another VDG member, Eric Crofts, raised concerns about some of the design details.

The planning committee agreed to make a site visit to assess the effect the proposed houses would have on Mr and Mrs Roses’ home, before making its comments to EHDC.
