Soapbox Derby teams lining up for the May showdown
MOMENTUM is gathering for the third fundraising Whitehill and Bordon Soapbox Derby in May.
The annual race which starts at the top of Chalet Hill, and finishes at the eastern entrance to Savile Crescent will raise funds this year for Hampshire Air Ambulance and the Bordon, Liphook and Haslemere Charity.
Already some teams entering home-made carts have made themselves known.Driving the Wacky Racer will be Paul Kimber and Simon Anscombe, and behind the wheel of Free Wheeler is Drew Munn, sponsored by Brice Munn Films.
Individual entrants include Peter Welland in the Bordon Rocket, Richard Marshall in Loose Bearings, and Chris Kirkwood in Calculated Descent.
And to help preparations get into gear, Whitehill Town Council has announced it has donated the use of Jubilee Park free of charge on race day.
Described as the go-kart equivalent of Formula One racing, the downhill course attracts hundreds of spectators.
The home made karts must weigh less than 80 kilos, and man and machine face a rigorous scrutiny before being allowed to approach the start line, for the first race at about 1.30pm.
Any driver suspected of being intoxicated will automatically be disqualified before they race, and any cart failing the inspection will also be automatically barred from racing.
Drivers must be over 16 years old, protective clothing must be worn, and brightly-coloured soap boxes, sponsorship and advertising are all actively encouraged.
For information about race day on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27, visit the race website. Entry forms are available from Bordon Shell garage.
