A PETERSFIELD Infant School pupil has a new German friend after a balloon she released floated hundreds of miles.

Seven-year-old Holly Robins-Mitchell and her young brother Jake (three), of Tilmore Road, released the balloon after bringing it back from their great, great uncle Fred’s 80th birthday party in the Royal British Legion Club.

Their dad, Wayne, said: “Holly wrote a letter explaining a bit about herself, attached it to the balloon and let it go.”

A few days later, much to Holly’s surprise, a letter arrived from Blexen in the district of Nordenham, Lower Saxony, northern Germany – 435 miles from Petersfield. It explained that a local girl Martha (17) had found the balloon, which had probably drifted across Holland before landing near the German village, on the opposite bank of the River Weser to the port of Bremerhaven.

Mr Robins said: “She wrote a nice reply, and since then they have been exchanging emails.”
