HAMPSHIRE Police has launched a summer campaign to crack down on the number of drink and drug drivers.

Until the end of this month, officers will be targeting people driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs on the county’s roads.

They are also promoting the message that drink and drug driving is unacceptable, and a fatal combination which makes impaired drivers 23 times more likely to kill themselves or someone else in a collision.

Superintendent Simon Dodds said: “Too many people are still taking the risk to drive whilst impaired – it’s simply not worth the devastation that is all too often left behind.

“We are dedicated to reducing it. These people not only put themselves at risk, but others who are often innocently going about their daily lives.

“Extra patrols will be out carrying out a number of proa-ctive breath and drug tests. I’d like to encourage the public to work with us for a safer community by reporting anyone they suspect is drink or drug driving by calling 101.

“All we need are details about the car being driven such as registration and the location, so that our officers can seek out those who commit these offences.”

People are also being asked to consider not drinking at all if they are going to summer events such as festivals, picnics and other outdoor get togethers.

Hampshire Police road safety spokesman Sergeant Rob Heard said: “Alcohol stays in your system for some time, especially if you’ve been drinking heavily the day or night before.

“Alcohol may still impair driving the morning after an event, so we are urging people to sort out alternative safe ways to travel if they intend to have a drink.”
