A police officer who saved a woman’s life by putting himself at risk in a live motorway lane has been applauded for his bravery at an awards ceremony.

Hampshire Police Constable Colin Jackson put himself at extreme risk to help the woman, who had already been seriously injured in a collision with a passing car.

Just after 10pm on May 23, 2025, police were called with concerns for the welfare of a woman on the M3 near Fleet services.

Officers rushed to the scene and began stopping traffic, but it was too dark to see, and the woman could not move due to the severity of her injuries.

This is when PC Jackson, faced with an urgent and critical situation, positioned himself in the live lanes of the motorway to bring traffic to a stop.

Through his swift actions, he created a safe area in which he could provide emergency first aid and get the woman the help she needed.

PC Jackson said: “We are often faced with dangerous situations in our jobs as police officers, and we need to act quickly and make the right decision under pressure.

“I’m happy to say this was one of those situations where we were able to help someone and I’m glad my actions played some part in that.”

PC Jackson was recognised for this work with a Certificate of Congratulations at the recent Joint Operations Unit Awards.

Over 40 officers and staff across both Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police were commended at Holdsworth Hall, Sulhamstead on June 23.

Chief Superintendent Simon Dodds said: “PC Jackson demonstrated exceptional courage and professionalism in an extremely challenging and dangerous situation.

“His quick thinking and decisive actions helped bring a vulnerable member of the public to safety and ensured she received the urgent care she needed. His compassion, bravery and commitment to protecting others reflect the very best of policing.”
