Police have asked for help in tracking down two men who tried to save a dog from burning to death in a suspicious vehicle fire close to a busy drive-thru in Petersfield.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal following the horrific incident in the McDonald’s car park shortly after midnight on Monday, June 22.

He’s since been released on bail but police are keen to speak to two men who were in the area and attempted to free the dog from the burning vehicle.

The emergency services received a report around 12.15am on the night that a vehicle was on fire in the McDonald’s car park at the A272 Winchester Road services. Firefighters attended but the dog was sadly found deceased in the vehicle.

The aforementioned suspect of no fixed abode – who was also arrested on suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and no insurance – has been bailed with conditions until 22 September.
