PLANS mooted months ago for speed limit reminder signs to be installed along Pulens Lane and around the fatal Durford Road crossroads junction appear to have stalled.

Now a 240 strong campaign group, Pulens Lane Against Speeding, is demanding to know why they haven’t gone up yet.

Campaign spokesman Georgina Dance said: “We are still awaiting the purchase and installation of the two promised signs.

“I am astounded this has not been expedited as a matter of urgency.

“I hope the bureaucracy which has prevented this happening swiftly is not demonstrative of the way Petersfield Town Council, East Hampshire District Council, and Hampshire County Council work together.”

The town council says it has ordered the signs; but the county council as the roads authority has to approve their use, and the district council is also helping out with funding and local advice.

The signs are attached to lampposts and flash the speed of oncoming cars so drivers can adjust their driving accordingly.

Town council spokesman Steve Field said: “The signs are ordered.

“But they have to be attached to lampposts and there is a weight limit.

“At a meeting this afternoon (April 26) we spoke with Hampshire County Council officers about this.

“They are now going to ask Scottish and Southern Electricity what is the maximum weight that can be hung on the lampposts.

“The county council also needs to agree where along the roads they can be positioned.

“We are making sure they are the right weight for lamp posts, and we have the right positions for them.

“I can’t say when they will go up, but ‘weeks’ is being talked about.”

The campaigners are also angry they have been left out of recent consultation meetings about the crossroads where they would like traffic lights installed.
