This weekend the sound of clashing shields and swords will ring out across the South Downs as Hampshire-based Anglo Saxon re-enactment group Herigeas Hundas come face to face with the Romans and Ancient Britons of The Vicus at Butser Ancient Farm.

The two re-enactment groups will be setting up camp at the outdoor museum with thrilling combat, archery and gladiatorial displays and living history talks throughout the weekend.

This exciting event will give visitors the chance walk among their ancestors at a pivotal point in British history, as one conqueror leaves and a new invader attacks.

Herigeas Hundas media officer Jen Atkinson said: “We are excited to be back at Butser Ancient Farm for 2021 and thrilled to be joined by our friends from The Vicus.

“This weekend will give visitors a unique opportunity to experience life at the edge of the Roman Empire at a time of great upheaval as the mighty Roman legions left the islands and raiding parties of warriors from the continent started arriving on these shores, the beginning of what would become the iconic Anglo-Saxon age.

“All the warriors from both groups are ready to show off their fighting skills to visitors and we’re looking forward to demonstrating everyday aspects of camp life from blacksmithing to ancient crafts and skills.”

Butser Ancient Farm offers a unique experimental archaeology site nestled into the rolling countryside of the South Downs National Park and features reconstructions of Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman Britain and the Anglo-Saxon period.
