TAKE a comic look at how Jane Austen created one of her most memorable characters in Mr Darcy Loses the Plot.
Award-winning duo LipService perform the show at the Theatre Royal Winchester on March 9 and 10, at 7.30pm, to celebrate the Austen in the 200th anniversary year of her death in the city.
Maggie Fox and Sue Ryder, who have been described as “the Laurel and Hardy of literary deconstruction”, portray the author sitting at her desk writing.
She is dreaming up Darcy, a proud, lip-curling, handsome creation in very tight pants. But then a door squeaks, a visitor approaches and she hastily hides herself and her work.
While she is stitching her quilt unawares, Darcy has discovered her writing and sets about embroidering a very different storyline.
LipService take the opportunity to explore the world of women writers too, with hilarious insights into the challenges they faced in the early 19th century, from scribbling under pseudonyms to attacks of the vapours.
