BEAUTIFUL music unveiled as a winter soundscape to match the atmospheric landscape or the joyous mood is one of the delights of Christmas.

And there is so much to choose from – from traditional carols and festive songs steeped in history, to pieces of classical music that conjure up the season.

Attending a concert at this time of year is guaranteed to get you gently or joyously into the spirit of things.

One to really look forward to is the first concert of the new season for the talented musicians who make up the Petersfield Area School’s String Orchestra.

These young people make up a 30-strong assemble and are plucked from twelve schools.

Under their leader Kate Taylor from The Petersfield School, they will perform a colourful and uplifting programme of classical, folk and Christmas music at St Peter’s Church on Saturday, December 12 at 7.30pm.

Solo performances of popular classical musical will also be included, along with carols.

Admission is free and the audience is welcome to join the orchestra for mince pies and other refreshments afterwards.

Variations on carols and Christmas songs, some specially arranged, will be sung by the Rogate Choral Society at its Annual Choral Feast on Friday, December 18, at 7.30pm, in the village hall.

As in previous years, the concert will be followed by a feast, with wine, prepared by choir members.

The choir is happy to include singers from outside its regular membership for the carol concert, with rehearsals for all at Rogate Village Hall on Tuesdays at 8.30pm.

Going off piste with their selection – singing numbers from the likes of The Beach Boys, Billy Joel, Simon and Gurfunkel and more - for their Papyrus Charity Concert is A Choir Named Dave.

This event at Harting Village Hall on December 15 at 7.30pm is in aid of Papyrus UK, a young suicide prevention charity.

It will include more classic and traditional tuneage too. Entry is free with retiring collection and mulled wine. E-mail [email protected]
