AN ALAN Ayckbourn is always an event, and so a new production of one of his classic comedies should delight audiences at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.
The revival of Henceforward... is directed by the playwright and runs from January 19 to 28 at the Guildford venue.
Ayckbourn first produced the play in Scarborough in 1987 and subsequently at the Vaudeville Theatre in London in 1988, starring Ian McKellen and Jane Asher, where it won the Evening Standard Best Comedy Award.
It tells the darkly comic tale of avant-garde composer Jerome who, in an isolated, derelict, suburban tower block, struggles to complete his life’s masterpiece about love.
With the help of a deranged android childminder, he hatches a plan to retrieve his source of artistic inspiration, his beloved daughter Geain, from his hostile, estranged ex-wife.
It is infused with Ayckbourn’s trademark themes of people and relationships, and takes a critical look at the creative process – and just how dangerous it can be.
